The origins of Cwm Choir are traced back to 1920 when all of it's members originated from the Grieg Colliery, as it was then named and later became the Marine Colliery. They took the name of the Cwm Apollo Choir and thrived on the love of singing through their strong religious backgrounds of the chapels and churches. It was during the 1940's that they amalgamated with another local colliery choir in Waunlwyd and become known as The Waun-Cwm Gleemen, this name was used up until 1965 when they changed to the present title of Cwm Male Choir. Although the mines are long gone, and the congregations in the chapels and churches are dwindling, the love of singing is still within the South Wales Valleys and our members come from all professions such as teachers, steelworkers , factory and shop workers. The village of Cwm is set deep in a valley three miles south of Ebbw Vale. The choir has proudly carried its name throughout the British Isles as well as abroad, having appeared in cities such as Edinburgh, Cork, Gloucester, Hereford, Devizes, Watford, Bournemouth, Sidmouth, Stoke on Trent as well as taking part on several occasions in the Festival of 1000 voices at the Royal Albert Hall. The choir also took part in the World Choir at the old Cardiff Arms Park on both occasions. Though appearing on the BBC summer scene program as well as on ARD (German Television) the choir has been able to take its music to a much wider audience. Cwm Male Choir is very proud to be a part of the history and heritage of our village and indeed of our country of Wales. |
